about

Album of abstract, often experimental music created using the programme Melodyne as a tool to manipulate and transform audio of various instruments in a variety of ways. These tracks are entitled sketches because they explore the possibilities of using different instruments, different types of recording (i.e.dirty as well as "clean" recordings of individual instruments.) Sometimes the audio isn't a single sample but a segment of a song or track that has more than one instrument on it. Also this way of creating works well with sounds that normally would be rejected on a standard recording: - slight out of tuneness, the sound of the piano pedal, "fluffed" notes etc.
I expected that after the first sonic sketches album, I might be done with this method of making music and even this style - but in fact I have loved it. What I love is the method of manipulating sound, the surprises that happen when moving, stretching, or isolating certain elements. I love the organic process - often the start of the process is quite static and seems like its going nowhere - and then suddenly some element becomes intriguing and the process kicks off. This reminds me of the process of making abstract art - a discovery process without a plan to set out to achieve something specific, but with the openness to explore and become enchanted with different elements and aspects and go with them. The lack of a specific challenge means that II can play with a single sound until I reach a level of personal satisfaction.

These recordings were created in this manner, with no knowledge of how they would be received as pieces of music or sonic art. Somewhat to my surprise, comments I have had on sound cloud have been extremely pleasing and heartening. Positive feedback has inspired me to work on new ideas, and new sketches. Sometimes I do this in strange, out of the way places. Because I already have the sounds, the manipulating of them is as portable as having a sketchpad. Providing I have a laptop, headphones, and a sound source, I can create anywhere, anytime.

These particular sketches were mostly created in random locations and most of these in Portugal, in a coffee bars or the deserted foyer of our holiday apartment, at dawn.
