about

The fifth album of consciously created sketches- working with a limited palette of audio sounds, and exploring what can happen to these sounds when teased out of their original context, and reformulated. The word used in an earlier album was "up cycled": taking audio that had already been used or discarded, and making something new out of it. This is interesting also, because the previous use of the audio, and especially its imperfections in other contexts, can be one of its main attractions. The best source material here, is "dirty" because minor blips, wobbles on notes, tuning deviations, bleeding of other sounds, even hiss can add qualities that wouldn't otherwise be there, and would be impossible in traditionally purely electronically created music. Because I'm exploring techniques too, I'm tending to repeat certain basic procedures: which are conceptually and creatively quite similar to a visual art process. This aspect - of having a canvas that can can be worked on, overworked, and sometimes goes through many phases - for example becoming much more intricate, and then being stripped back down to it's bare essentials, before being finalised is something I've come to enjoy very much. It's a process of discovery of taste, as well as of creation. Some tracks have a goal: e.g. track one set out to be 60 seconds long, or sometimes I have a clear intention such as to retain a sense of the drone in the dulcimer piece however the primary factor is to explore, and to be involved in the process, and for the process itself to be a satisfying journey. I tend to create these in an intensely focussed time-period, quite often having no inspiration at first, and gradually becoming absorbed in the sounds or the quirkiness of some particular sound. When I do go back it is to check whether I like the track, and often to remove what seems extraneous. Whist not setting out to be minimal, it seems to be often the beauty inherent in a single sound, note, or combination that draws me in and where I want to focus. I had no idea I would create 5 albums when I started this, but this method of writing and the type of music created is something that I am throughly enjoying.
