This albums "sonic sketches" are so called because they are designed to explore a particular tool. Also they are all based on samples or parts of recordings, reusing them to make something completely different.
The tool used is Melodyne, a piece of software. It is mainly looked upon as an editing tool but In this case, it is being used to change the sound data - almost like manipulating visual images on a page. Sounds can be stretched and moved and altered in quite a physical way. I had long been intending to experiment and in November 2013 I started.
These 13 tracks (all bar the 14th Aubarde) were created in November and it has become a journey of rediscovering a link and affinity for the sort of abstract music it has led to. The starting point was this track, created in 2009 one of only a few deliberately abstract tracks, cut from samples of sax notes a friend, Rick Woolgar had played in an improvisation on a song.
The sketches each take a single instrument or a single recording (except in the case of the cow bell added to some of the piano tracks). Each track has a development, but it has not been premeditated in any way. They develop like a solo does, a bit at a time.
I have begun to realise that, though I feel like a beginner again to this type of music, I am suddenly aware of roots that I had forgotten I had. The time playing in the Experimental Music Group at the Royal College of Music, and year spent with composers studying at the Warsaw Akademja Muzyczna. I dedicate these tracks to my contemporaries of that era. (Some of whom bask in acclaim and recognition - you know who you are!!) And, all those on soundcloud who have been giving comments and encouragement.
